Authorities confirmed that the crash occurred Sunday afternoon on Angeles Crest Highway, a mountainous roadway north of Los Angeles. According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident involved a single vehicle a Ferrari that veered off the road shortly after exiting a tunnel, struck a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Zampella, who was driving, died at the scene. A passenger was transported to a hospital and later died from their injuries. The passenger’s identity has not been publicly released.
The collision was reported around 12:45 p.m. in the San Gabriel Mountains. Investigators said the vehicle lost control on the winding, two-lane road, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials have not indicated whether speed, mechanical issues, or other factors contributed to the incident.
Footage provided to authorities reportedly shows the Ferrari striking the barrier immediately after exiting the tunnel. The vehicle involved was identified as a Ferrari 296 GTS, a high-performance hybrid sports car. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Zampella was widely recognized for shaping modern first-person shooters and action games. He previously served as CEO of Infinity Ward, the studio responsible for launching Call of Duty, which grew into one of the most commercially successful franchises in gaming history.
In 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment, which was later acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017. Under his leadership, Respawn developed major titles including Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Zampella also oversaw development efforts tied to EA’s Battlefield series, contributing to multiple flagship projects across EA’s portfolio. In a statement, Electronic Arts described Zampella’s death as a significant loss to the gaming world, citing his long-lasting influence on interactive entertainment. Industry peers and critics have highlighted his role in combining cinematic storytelling with immersive gameplay, helping define a generation of blockbuster video games. Zampella was often described as a reserved and grounded leader despite his success, known for focusing on creative direction rather than public attention.
Over more than two decades, Vince Zampella helped shape how modern action games are designed, played, and experienced. His work influenced millions of players worldwide and left a lasting mark on the industry through franchises that continue to dominate global gaming culture.
