Supergirl Fails to Soar at Box Office

DC Studios' latest superhero film, Supergirl, has gotten off to a disappointing start at the box office, delivering one of the weakest openings of the modern DC era and creating an early challenge for the studio's long-term cinematic plans.

The film debuted with $37.1 million domestically over its opening weekend and has earned approximately $68 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, opened in 3,602 North American theaters but fell well short of early industry expectations.

According to Variety, industry analysts project Supergirl could finish its theatrical run with roughly $100 million domestically and $200–210 million worldwide, totals that would leave the film well below the level typically needed for profitability.

The movie also faced stiff competition from Pixar's Toy Story 5, which remained the No. 1 film at the domestic box office during Supergirl's opening weekend.

Although the opening weekend numbers are underwhelming, Warner Bros. and DC Studios will now hope positive word of mouth and international audiences can improve the film's box office outlook in the coming weeks.
