The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is treating the case as an apparent double homicide and has launched a full investigation, though no suspects have been identified as of yet. City officials described the loss as “devastating” for the community, and tributes have been pouring in for the acclaimed filmmaker behind classics like The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally.
According to law enforcement, first responders were called to the Reiners’ Brentwood residence around 3:38 p.m. on Sunday for a medical emergency. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived and discovered an unresponsive 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman inside the home. The victims were later confirmed to be Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, though police initially withheld the identities pending family notification.
Investigators quickly determined the deaths to be suspicious. Senior law enforcement sources told local media that both victims appeared to have suffered stab wounds, and the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division assumed control of the case. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton of the LAPD said officers secured the scene and waited for a search warrant in order to conduct a thorough investigation of the premises. By Sunday evening, the department publicly characterized the case as an “apparent homicide,” but no arrests had been made and no suspect had been identified at that time. Hamilton emphasized that detectives would be interviewing multiple family members and witnesses as part of the investigation, clarifying that “no one has been detained; no one is being questioned as a suspect” so far. The official causes of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, and those findings have not yet been released to the public. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation as they gather evidence, noting that the inquiry is ongoing and all verified facts will be released through official channels.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom both released statements Sunday confirming that the deceased were indeed Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. “This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” Mayor Bass said in her statement. Governor Newsom similarly praised Reiner as “the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love,” lauding the filmmaker’s “boundless empathy” and noting how that empathy extended beyond film into Reiner’s passionate advocacy for children and civil rights,
The Reiner family also issued a brief statement on Sunday evening, expressing their heartbreak at the tragedy. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the family said. Law enforcement officials have stated that they are committed to finding answers in this case, and city leaders vowed to support the investigation. “I’m holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart,” Mayor Bass added , urging the community to come together in the wake of the loss.
