Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly has formally petitioned President Donald Trump to commute his 30-year federal prison sentence stemming from his sexual misconduct convictions.

The singer officially filed paperwork asking Trump to commute his sentence, which means he wants to spend less time in prison but would still have his convictions. He is serving time after being found guilty of federal sexual misconduct charges.
Kelly's lawyers have said before that they think he should be released and have raised concerns about his safety in prison. This is the first time they have officially asked for presidential clemency through the proper process.
Right now, there is no word on whether Trump will approve or deny the request.
