After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games has finally revealed key details about the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, but one announcement has generated nearly as much discussion as the game itself.

While GTA 6 is set to launch on Nov. 19, 2026, Rockstar confirmed that physical editions of the game will not include a disc. Instead, players purchasing a boxed copy at retail stores will find a download code inside the package, requiring them to download the game digitally.

The decision marks a major shift for one of gaming's biggest franchises and highlights the industry's continued move away from traditional physical media. Although fans will still be able to buy a collector-style box from retailers, ownership of the game will function the same way as a digital purchase once the code is redeemed.

Rockstar has not provided a detailed explanation for the move, but industry observers believe it could help prevent early leaks while also addressing the massive file size expected for GTA 6. Reports earlier this year suggested Take-Two and Rockstar were exploring ways to limit unauthorized access to the game before launch.

Despite the controversy, excitement surrounding GTA 6 remains sky-high. Rockstar also confirmed the game's $79.99 standard edition price tag, with preorders beginning June 25. Analysts expect the title to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, regardless of whether players buy it digitally or pick up a box containing little more than a download code.
