Jordan Brand is gearing up to release a special edition of its iconic Air Jordan 5 to honor Mexico’s Independence Day. Known as the Air Jordan 5 “El Grito,” this model takes its name from El Grito de la Independencia ("The Cry of Independence"), an event that symbolizes the start of Mexico’s journey toward freedom from Spanish rule.

On the night of September 16, 1810, priest Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in the town of Dolores, sparking the Mexican War of Independence. His cry, El Grito, continues to be honored every year when Mexico’s president reenacts this historic call to arms.
To pay homage to this pivotal moment in Mexican history, Jordan Brand is infusing the El Grito spirit into the design of the Air Jordan 5.
Expected to feature a sail upper with mismatched accents of red, green, and burgundy, the shoe reflects the Mexican flag’s colors. Additionally, each pair will come with unique detailing, including green shark teeth on the left shoe and red on the right, representing Mexico's national colors.
The Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” is slated to drop on September 12, 2024, just ahead of Mexico’s Independence celebrations. The sneaker will be available via SNKRS and select retailers. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed, but sneaker enthusiasts can expect a demand for this historical and cultural release.
