The city of Los Angeles has officially renamed the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue in honor of late rapper and community advocate Nipsey Hussle.

The South Los Angeles corner, now designated Nipsey Hussle Square, holds deep significance. It sits near Marathon Clothing, the store Hussle founded and the location where he was fatally shot in March 2019. The dedication ceremony drew family members, local officials, and hundreds of supporters who gathered to recognize his cultural and community impact.

Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, grew up in the Crenshaw district and frequently referenced the intersection in his music and interviews. Before achieving mainstream success, he and his brother Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom sold mixtapes in the area, building a grassroots following.

At the ceremony, Blacc Sam reflected on his brother’s influence, describing how Hussle inspired young people in underserved communities and encouraged ownership, entrepreneurship, and self-investment. Actress Lauren London, Hussle’s longtime partner, also attended and shared memories of conversations they once had about leaving a lasting mark on the neighborhood.

Local officials emphasized that the renaming goes beyond symbolism. Los Angeles City Council representatives noted that the location will serve as a permanent reminder of Hussle’s contributions to the city, particularly in South Los Angeles.

The intersection is also home to the Neighborhood Nip Foundation, an organization established to continue Hussle’s work by supporting youth programs, economic development initiatives, and violence prevention efforts. Hussle was of Eritrean descent through his father, and he often spoke about his East African heritage with pride. He visited Eritrea during his lifetime and publicly embraced his cultural background, connecting it to his identity and worldview.

In 2019, Hussle was shot and killed at age 33, an event that sparked global tributes and renewed discussions about community violence and local investment. His death led to widespread memorials across Los Angeles and recognition from political leaders, artists, and athletes.
