Former NBA player Nate Robinson is in a critical battle for his life as he seeks a kidney donor. Diagnosed with chronic kidney disease 18 years ago, the 40-year-old athlete has been fighting valiantly against the deteriorating function of his kidneys. Despite the challenges, Robinson remains hopeful and determined to witness his grandchildren’s milestones and share stories of his basketball career with future generations.

Robinson's kidneys currently operate at less than 15% of their optimal capacity. This severe condition has led to regular dialysis treatments, which he describes as physically and emotionally draining. On some days, post-dialysis effects include body cramps, shortness of breath, and intense vomiting. Yet, he strives to maintain a routine, including training sessions at the gym and precious moments with his children, to keep himself motivated and out of what he calls “the dark place.”

Reflecting on his journey, Robinson shared with Men’s Health how his early days were filled with anger and frustration. Diagnosed in 2006, while still an active player, he faced warnings from team doctors about his dangerously high blood pressure, one of the leading causes of kidney disease. Despite their advice, Robinson’s commitment to the game never wavered, even though it meant ignoring his health issues.

Robinson's illustrious NBA career, which spanned 11 seasons and eight teams, including the Knicks, Celtics, and Bulls, was highlighted by his remarkable feat of winning the Slam Dunk Contest three times. However, by 2018, his condition had progressed to kidney failure, necessitating immediate dialysis to stay alive. This realization struck hard when, during a 2020 hospital visit, doctors informed him that starting dialysis was his only chance of survival.

As Robinson continues his fight, he is in the process of getting listed on the Washington state kidney transplant waitlist and hopes to join the national registry.

The former guard also candidly discussed the additional challenges faced by Black individuals in accessing healthcare and obtaining transplants, highlighting systemic inequalities.

Robinson remains resilient, driven by the support of his family and the memory of his mother’s belief in his fighting spirit. He refuses to give up, stating, “I’ve never been a quitter, and I ain’t gon’ start now.” His story is not just one of struggle but of determination and the enduring hope for a life-saving kidney donor.
