The crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, an area tied to Joshua’s family roots. He was traveling in the back seat of a Lexus SUV when the vehicle was involved in a collision around late morning local time. The two individuals who died in the accident were identified as Sina, Joshua’s longtime strength and conditioning coach, and Latz, his personal trainer. Both were described as close friends and trusted members of Joshua’s inner circle. Reports indicate they were in Nigeria to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays with Joshua and his family.
Authorities have confirmed that Joshua and the driver survived the crash. According to statements from the Ogun State Police Command and local government officials, Joshua was transported to a specialized medical facility in Lagos shortly after the accident. Medical staff later confirmed that he was conscious, stable, and did not require emergency surgical intervention. Preliminary findings suggest the crash may have been caused by a tire failure, which led the driver to lose control before the SUV struck a stationary truck along the roadway. The investigation is ongoing, and officials say further details will be released as more information becomes available.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed he was on holiday with family when he learned of the incident. He said the focus remains on Joshua’s health and supporting those affected by the tragedy. The incident comes shortly after Joshua’s most recent victory, which marked his 29th win in 33 professional bouts. The former two-time heavyweight champion had been positioning himself for a potential high-profile return to the title picture in 2026.
For now, those plans are secondary as Joshua and the wider boxing community mourn the loss of two respected figures behind the scenes of his career.
