Matt Bomer recently revealed in an interview that he had auditioned for the role of Superman in the early 2000s but was not cast due to his sexuality. The actor, known for his impressive body of work in film and television, shared insights into the audition process during the June 10 episode of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast.

Bomer recounted spending several months immersed in auditions, screen tests, and chemistry reads for the role, which was part of an early iteration of Superman called "Superman: Flyby," written by J.J. Abrams. Despite seeming like the director's choice for the role, the project ultimately never materialized.

During this time, Bomer was also appearing on the soap opera Guiding Light. He mentioned that an executive producer of the show graciously wrote him off in case he landed the role of Clark Kent in the Superman film, which was initially set to be directed by Brett Ratner. Bomer even indicated that he had signed a three-picture deal with Warner Bros., suggesting that the role was within his grasp.

However, Bomer, who publicly came out as gay in 2012, suggested that his sexuality played a role in the decision to cast someone else for the role. He expressed his understanding that during that era, one's sexuality could be used against them in the industry.

Although the Superman film Bomer auditioned for never came to fruition, Bryan Singer eventually directed "Superman Returns" in 2006, starring Brandon Routh.

Despite not landing the iconic role, Bomer has enjoyed success in various film and TV projects, including "Fellow Travelers," "Magic Mike," "White Collar," "In Time," and "The Normal Heart," for which he won a Golden Globe and received an Emmy nomination.

In a 2020 interview, Bomer reflected on the decision to come out, acknowledging the risks it posed to his career at the time. However, he emphasized the importance of being true to himself for the sake of his family and personal authenticity. He acknowledged that while coming out may have affected certain aspects of his career, he believed it was worth it if it could help even one person.
