Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn left pectoral muscle during Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the injury on Monday, following an MRI that revealed the extent of the damage.

Allen sustained the injury late in the third quarter while attempting to stop a 7-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry. Despite expressing some optimism post-game, tests confirmed the need for season-ending surgery.

The injury is a massive setback for the Commanders, who have relied heavily on Allen's defensive prowess since drafting him in the first round in 2017. The two-time Pro Bowler (2021, 2022) recorded two sacks in six games this season and had been an integral part of Washington's defensive line, especially alongside fellow standout defensive tackle Daron Payne.

In addition to Allen's injury, defensive ends Dorance Armstrong (rib) and Javontae Jean-Baptiste (right foot) also left the game with injuries, leaving the Commanders' defensive front in a precarious position. Their return status is still up in the air.

The Commanders will likely turn to second-round draft pick Johnny Newton and 2021 second-rounder Phidarian Mathis to fill the gap. Allen, an eight-year veteran, has been a cornerstone for Washington's defense, playing in at least 15 games each season since joining the team.

Washington’s defense will feel the absence of Allen, especially as they lead the NFC East with a 4-2 record, thanks in part to the strong performance of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Allen has one more year remaining on his contract, though there is no guaranteed money, meaning Washington could free up $17 million in cap space if they decide to release him.
