A24's horror phenomenon Backrooms has taken the box office by storm, earning an impressive $81.5 million domestically during its opening weekend and instantly becoming one of the biggest success stories of 2026. The film also grossed $118 million worldwide, far exceeding industry expectations and setting a new opening-weekend record for A24.

Directed by 20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons, Backrooms is inspired by his viral internet horror series that enthralled millions of online viewers. The movie delves deeper into the unsettling mythology of infinite yellow corridors and enigmatic alternate dimensions that initially gained fame through internet culture.
The film's opening weekend is particularly remarkable given its reported $10 million production budget. Analysts had expected a much smaller debut, but positive word-of-mouth and strong interest from younger audiences propelled the movie to the top spot at the box office.
Even critics at Rotten Tomatoes echoed the enthusiastic response from younger viewers, awarding the movie a 90% rating.
With substantial audience interest and discussions of potential sequels underway, Backrooms appears poised to remain one of the year's most talked-about films.
