The Washington Commanders have made a notable move to strengthen their secondary, acquiring Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints. The trade, which is pending a physical, sees Washington sending third-, fourth-, and sixth-round 2025 draft picks to New Orleans in exchange for Lattimore and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

This trade comes as Washington seeks to enhance depth and skill in its cornerback lineup. With Benjamin St-Juste leading their corner unit and rookie Mike Sainristil temporarily playing outside despite being drafted as a slot corner, Lattimore's arrival allows the Commanders to reposition Sainristil to his natural slot role. St-Juste and Lattimore are expected to bring stability and versatility to the team's defensive backfield.

Drafted 11th overall in 2017, Lattimore has been a cornerstone for the Saints, known for his defensive skills and playmaking abilities. Over his eight-year career, he has notched 405 tackles, 15 interceptions, 88 pass breakups, and five forced fumbles. His standout performances earned him four Pro Bowl selections, including a Defensive Rookie of the Year honor after his impressive 2017 debut season.

However, injuries have impacted Lattimore’s availability, with 19 missed games over the past two seasons. Despite recent setbacks, his resume speaks volumes, as he has consistently disrupted passes and held opponents to a low catch rate when healthy.

Washington’s defensive stats indicate room for improvement, ranking 21st in yards allowed per pass attempt but fifth in passing yards per game. Adding Lattimore’s talent and experience will be a significant boost to a team looking to rise in defensive rankings.

Lattimore's contract extends through 2026 with cap hits of $18 million in 2025 and $18.5 million in 2026, but Washington faces minimal financial risk this season, covering just $605,000 of his remaining salary.
