Top 25 College Football Teams After Week 1

College football is officially back, and the opening weekend wasted no time shaking up the national picture. From statement wins by the teams at the top to unexpected struggles from ranked contenders, the first week has already given fans plenty to argue about.

With conference races beginning to take shape and the College Football Playoff sitting in the distance, it’s time to take a fresh look at the country’s best after week 1. Here is the Too Recklss Top 25, ranking the teams that have made the strongest case to be among the nation’s elite.

Teams Just Missing The Top 25

South Carolina -- South Carolina South Carolina is a fringe Top 25 team after an impressive 57-0 season-opening win over Kent State. The Gamecocks looked completely different offensively, putting up 645 total yards while LaNorris Sellers threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns. The biggest question is whether that performance can translate against SEC competition, especially with Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Georgia all on the schedule. For now, South Carolina has shown enough to be in the conversation, but it needs to prove itself against better competition before earning a firm spot in the Top 25.

Boise State — Boise State nearly pulled off the upset against Oregon, falling 34-27. The Broncos showed they can compete with one of the best teams in the country and could quickly enter the rankings with another strong performance.

Pittsburgh — Pittsburgh is a team to watch outside the Top 25. The Panthers have the talent to compete in the ACC, but they need to put together some bigger wins before making the jump into the rankings.

Florida -- Florida should be considered a fringe Top 25 team after a strong opening- week performance against Florida Atlantic. The Gators dominated the Owls 66-21 in Jon Sumrall’s debut, putting up 624 yards of total offense. Quarterback Aaron Philo threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Jadan Baugh added 160 rushing yards and three scores. While FAU is not an elite opponent, Florida showed enough offensive explosiveness and balance to put itself in the Top 25 conversation. With a tough SEC schedule ahead, the Gators will have plenty of opportunities to prove they belong, but for now, they remain just outside the rankings.

Virginia — Virginia deserves consideration after a strong start to the season. The Cavaliers have an opportunity to prove themselves in the ACC, but they need more consistency before cracking the Top 25.

Duke — Duke is another ACC team sitting just outside the rankings. The Blue Devils have shown enough potential to be on the radar, but they still need a statement win against stronger competition to earn a spot.

Number 25. Louisville

This team, led by Jeff Brohm, lost what was arguably the best game of the week on a walk-off field goal. Junior quarterback Lincoln Kienholz delivered an impressive performance against Ole Miss, passing for over 300 yards and rushing for an additional 69 yards. Despite Kienholz's three combined touchdowns, they couldn't overcome a top 10 Ole Miss team, though they showed promise by nearly rallying from a 14-point deficit in the 4th quarter. For this reason, I will acknowledge this loss by placing Louisville in the top 25. But definitely expect them to climb my rankings this season.

Number 24. Michigan

Michigan has a new head coach, with Kyle Whittingham coming out of retirement to lead the Wolverines. The team is 1-0 after a highly controversial call, but surviving and advancing is essential for any team. However, quarterback Bryce Underwood's performance left much to be desired, completing 12 of 22 passes with an interception and a fumble in a game against in-state rival Western Michigan. Many expected a blowout against the reigning MAC Champion. The only unit on Michigan that can be pleased with this game is the defense, which held Western Michigan to 12 points.

Number 23 Missouri

Mizzou excelled against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Transfer quarterback Austin Simmons delivered an outstanding performance, complemented by a strong defensive game. There are no complaints about the Missouri Tigers after week 1.

Number 22 SMU

SMU pulled off a surprising victory Tuesday morning in a game many did not expect the Mustangs to win. Despite committing four turnovers, including two interceptions from senior quarterback Kevin Jennings and two fumbles from Jalen Hale and Yamir Knight, SMU found a way to escape with a win in the difficult environment of Florida State. However, the victory came with plenty of concerns. Jennings was forced to scramble more than expected, and the Mustangs struggled to slow down Florida State’s rushing attack. Those issues cannot be overlooked, especially with tougher competition ahead. While beating Florida State on the road is an impressive result, SMU still has plenty to prove before it can be considered one of the nation’s top teams.

Number 21 Iowa

The one thing about Iowa Football is the consistency is just absurd. They will always have a very solid defense a good O Line and dominant Tight Ends. It looks to be more of the same this year after a 40-0 Win over Northern Illinois University. Senior running back Kamari Moulton looks to be a problem again for future opponents. This game he rushed for 183 yards on only 11 carries!!

Number 20`. Houston

Houston comes in at No. 20 after opening the season with a statement 33-20 win over Oregon State. The Cougars showed they can compete on both sides of the ball, putting up 497 yards of offense while staying composed throughout the game. While Houston still has plenty to prove against tougher competition, its Week 1 performance was enough to earn a spot in the Top 25. At No. 21, the Cougars have a chance to prove they belong among the nation’s best as the season moves forward.

Number 19 Utah

Utah lands at No. 19 after a dominant opening-week performance against Idaho. The Utes put up 633 total yards and cruised to a 66-14 victory, showing impressive balance with 364 yards on the ground and 269 through the air. (Utah Utes) Devon Dampier looked sharp in his return, throwing for three touchdowns, while Wayshawn Parker found the end zone three times. (Utah Utes) The win came against an FCS opponent, so Utah still has plenty to prove, but with Arkansas coming to Salt Lake City next, No. 19 feels like a fair spot for a team that could quickly climb the rankings with another strong performance.

Number 18 Penn State

Penn State performed impressively against Marshall. The defense kept Marshall from scoring, and quarterback Rocco Becht excelled by throwing for 271 yards and 4 touchdowns. Although the passing game was strong, the running game didn't resemble the dominant Penn State of past seasons. It's only week 1, but this is something to watch as the season develops.

Number 17 Tennessee

Tennessee comes in at No. 17 after an impressive 56-9 season-opening win over Furman. The Vols showed plenty of explosiveness on offense, putting up 638 total yards while freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon looked like a player capable of making an impact right away. Brandon accounted for five touchdowns in his college debut, throwing for 226 yards and three scores while adding two rushing touchdowns. Tennessee still has plenty to prove against tougher SEC competition, but the combination of Brandon’s playmaking ability, an explosive offense and a defense that recorded six sacks makes No. 17 a strong starting point. With a road matchup against Georgia Tech next, the Vols have an early opportunity to move even higher.

Number 16 Washington

Washington holds steady at No. 16 after their season-opening 24-10 win against Washington State in the Apple Cup. Though the Huskies didn't dominate offensively, they proved their ability to secure a tough rivalry victory despite obstacles. Demond Williams Jr. achieved 268 passing yards and added a rushing touchdown, while Washington's defense restricted the Cougars to only 242 total yards and stopped them from converting any third-down attempts on nine tries. Despite some issues, especially with 130 penalty yards, starting 1-0 against an improved Washington State justifies Washington's spot in the 16 slot.

Number 15 Texas Tech

Texas Tech sits at No. 15 after a shaky 33-10 win over Abilene Christian. While the Red Raiders got the job done, the performance was not as convincing as expected from a preseason contender. Texas Tech struggled to consistently move the ball and failed to turn its opportunities into the type of dominant performance we expected. With a tougher schedule ahead, the Red Raiders need to clean up some of those issues quickly. For now, No. 15 feels like a fair spot — the talent is there, but Texas Tech needs to show it can put together a complete performance against better competition.

Number 14 BYU

BYU remains at No. 14 after a commanding 63-7 win over Utah Tech in its season opener. The Cougars appeared to be one of the most well-rounded teams in the nation, putting up 42 points before halftime and securing four turnovers. Bear Bachmeier passed for three touchdowns, and freshman Legend Glasker scored three times in his first game. Although the competition wasn't tough enough to warrant a significant rise in rankings, BYU performed as expected for a Top 15 team against a weaker opponent.

Number 13 Alabama

Alabama remains at No. 13 despite beating East Carolina 48-14. The Crimson Tide handled business and showed plenty of offensive explosiveness, but the performance wasn't enough to separate them from the teams ahead of them. Alabama remains one of the most talented teams in the country, but with several programs making bigger statements in Week 1, the Tide remain in the same position in the rankings.

Number 12 USC

USC jumps to No. 12 after shutting out Fresno State 39-0. The Trojans looked comfortable throughout the game, with the defense making a major statement by holding Fresno State scoreless. USC also showed enough offensively to cruise to a convincing victory. After an inconsistent stretch in recent seasons, this was a strong opening performance and gives the Trojans an early opportunity to prove they belong higher.

Number 11 Oklahoma

Oklahoma drops to No. 11 despite completely dominating UTEP 51-0. The Sooners looked impressive on both sides of the ball, but the competition wasn't strong enough to justify moving them higher. Oklahoma's defense was especially impressive, pitching a shutout and controlling the game from the opening kickoff. The Sooners have the talent to climb, but they'll need stronger wins to move back toward the Top 10.

Number 10 Texas A&M

Texas A&M drops slightly to No. 10 despite shutting out Missouri State 50-0. The Aggies looked dominant and controlled the game from beginning to end, but the lack of competition makes it difficult to move them higher. Texas A&M has the talent to compete near the top of the SEC, but tougher tests will determine whether the Aggies belong in the Top 5.

Number 9 Ole Miss

Ole Miss stays at No. 9 after surviving Louisville 41-38 in one of the most competitive games of the opening weekend. The Rebels showed plenty of offensive firepower and found a way to make enough plays late to escape with the win. However, allowing 38 points is concerning, and honestly, the Ole Miss defense scares me heading into the rest of the season. The offense looks capable of carrying this team, but if the defense continues to give up big plays and a lot of points, I have a hard time seeing the Rebels competing with the best teams in the country.

Number 8 LSU

LSU jumps to No. 8 after one of the more impressive wins of the opening weekend, defeating Clemson 51-10. The Tigers dominated a ranked opponent and made a major statement on the national stage. LSU's defense completely shut down Clemson while the offense continued to pile on points. A win like that gives the Tigers a strong argument for being one of the best teams in the country.

Number 7 Oregon

Oregon holds the No. 7 spot after a challenging 34-27 victory over a strong Boise State team. Although the Ducks were anticipated to dominate the game, Boise State maintained competitiveness throughout, revealing some flaws in Oregon's defense. Despite possessing considerable talent and demonstrating sufficient offensive capability to secure the win, the narrow margin makes it difficult to rank the Ducks higher at this time. To be regarded as one of the top teams nationally, Oregon needs to address these issues against stronger opponents.

Number 6 Indiana

Indiana moves up to No. 6 after another dominant performance to open the season. The Hoosiers cruised to a 52-16 win over North Texas, showing they can control a game on both sides of the ball. Indiana's offense was explosive, while the defense consistently made it difficult for North Texas to stay in the game. After a strong start, I think No. 6 is a fair spot for Indiana, but the Hoosiers will need to prove they can play at the same level against tougher Big Ten competition.

Number 5 Texas

Texas moves up to No. 5 after a dominant 59-7 win over Texas State. The Longhorns looked in control from the opening kickoff, putting up points while their defense kept Texas State from making the game competitive. Texas showed the kind of balance and explosiveness you'd expect from a team with College Football Playoff expectations. With the Longhorns now facing tougher competition, No. 5 feels like a strong spot, but they have a chance to move even higher if they continue playing at this level.

Number 4 Notre Dame

Notre Dame moves up to No. 4 after a convincing 41-13 win over Wisconsin. The Fighting Irish looked strong on both sides of the ball and never really let Wisconsin get comfortable. Notre Dame's defense set the tone, while the offense consistently made enough plays to pull away. With a statement win over a solid opponent, I think No. 4 is a fair spot for the Irish and shows that they should be in the conversation among the best teams in the country.

Number 3 Miami

Miami moves up to No. 3 after a dominant 45-6 win over Stanford, but there are still some concerns with this Hurricanes team. The offense looked explosive and showed why Miami deserves to be near the top of the rankings, but the defensive line did not look as strong as I expected. If Miami wants to compete for a national championship, the D-line has to be better against tougher competition. For now, the talent and offensive firepower are enough to keep the Hurricanes at No. 3, but that defensive line is something I’ll be watching closely.

Number 2 Georgia

Georgia moves up to No. 2 after a dominant 63-3 win over Tennessee State. The Bulldogs completely controlled the game from start to finish, showing the depth and physicality that has made them one of the most consistent programs in college football. Georgia's defense was especially impressive, holding Tennessee State to just three points, while the offense had no trouble putting points on the board. The Bulldogs have looked like one of the most complete teams in the country, and after Week 1, I think No. 2 is where Georgia belongs.

Number 1 Ohio State

Ohio State stays at No. 1 after dominating Ball State 56-3 in its season opener. The Buckeyes looked like the most complete team in the country, controlling the game on both sides of the ball and never giving Ball State a chance to compete. Ohio State's offense was explosive, while the defense held Ball State to just three points. It was exactly the type of performance you want to see from the No. 1 team, and until someone gives the Buckeyes a reason to move, Ohio State has earned the top spot.
