Lionel Messi delivered another unforgettable World Cup performance Tuesday night, leading Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Algeria in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Playing in what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance, the 39-year-old superstar reminded fans why he remains one of the greatest players in soccer history. Messi scored all three goals for Argentina, recording the first World Cup hat trick of his legendary career and giving the defending champions a perfect start to their title defense.
Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after connecting with a pass from Rodrigo De Paul to put Argentina ahead 1-0.
The Argentine captain struck again in the 60th minute to double the lead before completing his hat trick in the 76th minute, sending the crowd in Kansas City into a frenzy.
Messi was later substituted to a standing ovation after one of the most memorable performances of the tournament so far.
The historic night also saw Messi tie Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup goals record with 16 career goals. His three-goal performance helped Argentina take control of Group J and continue its quest for back-to-back World Cup titles.
