Lionel Messi has confirmed that he will not be participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics with Argentina. The football legend cited his commitments to both the Copa América and his club, Inter Miami, as reasons for this decision

At 36, Messi is currently focused on helping Argentina defend their Copa América title in the United States. The tournament kicks off on June 20 with Argentina's opening match against Canada and concludes with the final on July 14. With the Olympic men's soccer tournament scheduled to run from July 24 to August 9, Messi decided that participating in both would be too demanding.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN Argentina, Messi revealed that he had a candid conversation with Argentina U23 coach Javier Mascherano. "I spoke with Mascherano, and we both understood the situation," Messi said. "Being involved in both the Copa América and the Olympics would mean too much time away from the club. Plus, I'm not at an age where I can do everything. "Messi has fond memories of his previous Olympic experience, having won gold with Argentina in 2008 alongside Mascherano in Beijing. "Winning the Olympics was a wonderful experience. It's special and different from anything else," he reminisced. However, Messi emphasized the importance of making wise choices at this stage in his career. "I need to pick my battles carefully, and playing two consecutive tournaments is just too much."

Messi's commitment to Argentina means he could miss at least five games for Inter Miami during the Copa América. If he were to compete in the Olympics as well, his absence would extend further, impacting key matches, including the Leagues Cup, which Miami won last year. Miami's coach, Gerardo "Tata" Martino, previously stated that players must choose between the Copa América and the Olympics due to the close scheduling. Martino, who formerly coached Argentina, acknowledged the challenges of balancing national and club duties. Despite the scheduling conflicts, Messi continues to be a crucial player for Inter Miami, scoring 11 goals and providing 12 assists in just 12 matches, propelling the team to the top of the Supporters' Shield standings.

Messi's decision to focus on the Copa América and his club responsibilities aligns with his illustrious career achievements. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has already secured a full set of international titles, including the Copa América in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022. While the allure of the Olympics is strong, Messi's focus remains on making the most of his current opportunities and sustaining his remarkable legacy.
