Garnett’s role will extend beyond ceremonial appearances. According to the team, his responsibilities will include involvement in business initiatives, community outreach, fan engagement, and content development. In addition, the Timberwolves confirmed plans to retire Garnett’s No. 21 jersey during one of the next two NBA seasons, a long-anticipated honor.

The reunion comes after years of distance between Garnett and the organization following his retirement in 2016. A strained relationship with former owner Glen Taylor led Garnett to publicly oppose a jersey retirement. That stance changed after the franchise transitioned to new ownership under Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, with both sides working to rebuild trust and establish a shared vision.

“I’m thrilled to be back home,” Garnett said in a statement. He described Minnesota as the place where his career began and credited the new ownership group for bringing renewed energy and direction to the franchise. Garnett also expressed excitement about contributing to the future of the team and its connection to the community.

Garnett’s impact on the Timberwolves remains unmatched. He is a 15-time NBA All-Star and the franchise’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, making him the only player in NBA history to lead a team in all five categories. He also remains the only Timberwolves player to win NBA Most Valuable Player, earning the award during the 2003–04 season.

During his tenure, Garnett led Minnesota to eight consecutive playoff appearances from 1997 through 2004, including the franchise’s first trip to the Western Conference finals. That era defined the most successful stretch in team history until the Timberwolves’ recent postseason resurgence.

Since acquiring the team, Lore and Rodriguez have emphasized rebuilding the franchise’s culture and strengthening relationships with former players. Their leadership has included significant investment in basketball operations, a continued willingness to pay luxury tax penalties, and long-term planning for a potential new arena in downtown Minneapolis.

With Garnett returning in an official capacity and his jersey set to be retired, the Timberwolves are formally reconnecting with one of the most important figures in their history. The move signals a renewed focus on honoring the past while continuing to build toward sustained success.
