The Washington Commanders have signed quarterback Marcus Mariota to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, aiming to strengthen their depth at the position ahead of the 2024 NFL season. The move provides the Commanders with an experienced signal-caller who can serve as either a bridge starter or a reliable backup, depending on the team's direction.

With the Commanders still determining their long-term quarterback plans, Mariota's presence offers both stability and competition. The 30-year-old quarterback brings nine years of NFL experience, having played for multiple teams, including the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles. Known for his mobility and dual-threat capabilities, Mariota provides versatility to Washington’s offense.
While the Commanders hold the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, there is widespread speculation that they may select a rookie quarterback. If that happens, Mariota could serve as a mentor while also being a capable starter if needed. His signing signals the team’s intent to have a seasoned veteran who can step in immediately should their draft plans require additional development time for a younger quarterback.
Mariota spent the 2023 season as Jalen Hurts’ backup with the Philadelphia Eagles but saw limited action. His most recent starting experience came in 2022 with the Atlanta Falcons, where he started 13 games before being replaced by rookie Desmond Ridder late in the season. Throughout his career, Mariota has demonstrated flashes of high-level play but has struggled with consistency and durability.
Washington's quarterback room underwent major changes following a disappointing 2023 season. The team moved on from Sam Howell after an inconsistent year, leaving an opening that Mariota can now compete for. With a new coaching staff and fresh leadership under head coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders appear poised to reshape their offensive strategy.
Mariota’s addition gives the Commanders a reliable option at quarterback while providing flexibility in their roster decisions. Whether he serves as a bridge to a future franchise QB or competes for the starting job, his experience and skill set will be valuable in Washington’s transition phase.
