Johnson, 39, said he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2025 after first noticing weakness in his right hand. Doctors determined he has sporadic ALS, the most common form of the disease, meaning it developed without any family history. The disease has progressed rapidly, leaving Johnson unable to speak without the assistance of a speech-generating device.

"I want people to know that I'm still me," Johnson said during the interview. "ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn't changed who I am." He added that he hopes sharing his story will raise awareness of the disease and encourage others facing similar challenges.

Johnson said he is participating in a clinical trial as he continues to fight the disease. Following his announcement, the Titans and Jets released statements offering their support, with Tennessee owner Amy Adams Strunk praising Johnson's lasting impact on the franchise and pledging to stand by him throughout his journey.
